We are sad to report the death of “Bob the Bass” on Friday 5th Feb 2010.
Bob had been suffering from lung cancer for several months but “never one to give up”, continued playing his beloved Eb with us almost until the end.
He first joined the band as a youngster in 1968 playing under John Fleming, before joining the Police Force as a cadet in 1973. His work with the police meant that he was based in the Midlands for many years before returning to Morecambe 6 yrs ago.
We shall miss him greatly for his unfailing cheerfulness and total dedication to our Band. Banding was his life and he never missed a rehearsal whether it was helping with the Youth Band, The Brass Ensemble or The Senior Band.
We offer our sympathy to his father John Disney and to his two daughters Helen and Carole. Bob’s funeral will be held next Wednesday 17th Feb at 1.15 pm at Lancaster Crematorium. All players past and present are invited to come and join us as we honour Bob with our music.

The Senior Band are currently heads down and concentrating on pieces for forthcoming contests. Competition in the Second Section is bound to be high, but obviously Morecambe Brass Band will be hoping to achieve good results from our hours of effort! Concentration is switched on as we head towards Blackpool next month.....more to follow. |

To round off the band's Christmas playing schedule, some members performed at the Midland Hotel in Morecambe. This was warmly received - indeed we have been asked to make this a regular feature - watch this space...!

The Senior Band competed in the Second Section at Wilkinson's St. Helen's Contest on Sunday 15th November. Performing Triptych by Philip Sparke, we were delighted to win Second Place, with Chris Larder (our former conductor who many of you are familiar with) storming the section, winning the trophy for best solo performer. Nice one Chris! |

The band competed at Fleetwood Contest yesterday (Sunday 4th Oct) and achieved a very creditable 5th place with 183 points. Pretty good going for our new foray into the Second Section, and an enjoyable day was had by all. |

The Senior Band were afforded the honour of being asked to perform
at Southport Flower Show over the weekend, as this much loved event
celebrated it's 80th Anniversary. The weather did everyone proud
especially on Saturday - we played to rapturous applause and calls for
more from a delighted audience, sat basking in the sunshine! Judging by
the number of our CD's sold perhaps it is time for an official fan
club....?!
The whole event was beautifully organised, with stunning floral
displays to accompany the stunning music. We are delighted to have been
asked back for Southport Flower Show 2010...book your seats now to avoid disappointment!
Hopefully we will have some pictures of the event to show you soon,
the band certainly enjoyed the whole weekend as much as the audience. |

We would like to thank all our loyal supporters and new visitors who joined us and other bands for 'A Stroll in the Park' over the summer. There were mixed blessings on the weather front, but all ended with a final concert on Sunday in glorious conditions. It was lovely to see people of all generations young and old basking in the sunshine and enjoying the live concerts. Here's to next year - obviously we are practising hard already!!

Second Section Here We Come!! |
|
The Band are delighted to announce that after several fantastic results in recent months we have been promoted to the Second Section - not just in the North West but at National level as well!
" This double promotion is an outstanding achievement for Morecambe Brass Band. Our consistent contest performances have fully merited the success the band has now gained. I am expecting a solid year in the new section - with hopefully some success along the way."
Mr. Andrew Warriner - Musical Director

Easter Concert
The band performed their now traditional Easter Concert at the Platform on Saturday night, receiving glowing reports from the packed audience. The programme included a number of beautifully played solos - Share My Yoke (Paul Woodhead - Prinipal Cornet), Dmitri (Carol Blaylock - Flugel Horn), The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Jeff Cunningham - Solo Horn). Particularly moving for both band and audience alike was Pie Jesu, a duet showcasing the talents of both Carol Blaylock and Samantha Barbary (Soprano Cornet).
Not usually noted for being a 'solo instrument' Colin Hendra gave his all performing Drummer's Delight with much gusto!!
The event was being recorded as we are about to release a new CD - further details to follow......
Many thanks to all who helped make the event a great success - hope to see you all in a few weeks in Happy Mount Park when we kick off the 'Bands in the Park' season. (see Engagements section for details of upcoming events)

North West Regional Championships |
|
Sunday 8th March 2009
Last weekend the band competed, under the musical direction of Andrew Warriner in the Third Section alongside other bands in the North West Regional Championships, held this year in the Winter Gardens, Blackpool. Competition was high, and Morecambe band came a very creditable fifth out of twenty. The Spanish Hall was alive with some very different interpretations of "The Once and Future King" by Andrew Baker, a piece thoroughly enjoyed by both players and audience alike - though we think Derek Broadbent may be excused from listening to it for some time to come !! |
